David Gatebe was born in Kroonstad in the Free State, South Africa. The former petrol attendant, who now works as a sport officer in the mines in Rustenburg, made history when he broke the down-run record at the 2016 Comrades Marathon.

He completed the down-run from Pietermaritzburg to Durban in a record time of five hours 18 minutes and 13 seconds, breaking Leonid Shvetzov’s nine-year record. Despite his impressive title as the Comrades down-run record holder, David is a very reserved and quiet person with a warm and welcoming smile.
